Our General English courses are designed for people who want to improve fluency and accuracy. This course will benefit you if you are learning for work, study or personal development.

Intensive English
Like the General English option, this course is designed for people that want to improve fluency and accuracy but with the added opportunity to focus on an area of weakness in the afternoon. Afternoon classes are less structured and student lead. Your teacher will ask you to complete a needs analysis to find out what you want to learn and plan the classes accordingly.

◆ Minimum age 18yrs - 16 and 17 years old can join the course depending on their level.

 

Super-intensive English
This course is our most intensive experience. With 6 hours of tuition each day, you can maximise your learning by focussing completely on your studies. Your morning classes focus on communication, using tasks and engaging activities focussing on the world around you. In the afternoons, you get extra support from a teacher on what you would like to develop. Our teachers will ask you to complete a needs analysis to find out how best to help you.

 

◆ 30 hours per week, Monday to Friday
◆ Maximum 14 students per class, average of 8
◆ Minimum age 18yrs - 16 and 17 years old can join the course depending on their level.

 

English Plus
Our English Plus course includes 15 hours of General English for those looking to improve fluency and accuracy and in the afternoon session you will focus on a specialist topic dependent on your needs or interests, developing both language and skills. Topics available include:
- Culture & Etiquette - Leadership
- Hospitality & Tourism - Work Place & job applications/job search

 

◆ 20 hours per week, Monday to Friday
◆ Maximum 14 students per class with average of 8 in mornings, 4 in afternoons
◆ Minimum age 18yrs - 16 and 17 years old can join the course depending on their level.

 

ONE-TO-ONE
Our One-to-One course can be completely tailor made according to your needs and objectives. This course will benefit students who have a particular focus or goal or a desire to learn intensively.

 

Get ready for IELTS
Our IELTS preparation course consists of General English classes in the morning where you will develop fluency and accuracy. In the afternoon sessions, you will focus exclusively on the language skills and exam techniques required to give you the best chance of getting the score you need for university or work. Note: This course does not include the exam. When you are ready, we can assist you to register for the exam at the Edinburgh exam centre.

 

◆ 4 & 8 week course options available.
◆ 22.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday
◆ Minimum level required is B1
◆ Maximum 14 students per class in the mornings, 10 in the afternoons. Average is 10 and 6.
◆ Minimum age 18yrs - 16 and 17 years old can join the course depending on their level.

 

OET Exam
The Occupational English Test is an international English language test for the healthcare sector. It assesses the language communication skills of healthcare professionals who wish to register and practise in an English-speaking environment. Mackenzie School is the Edinburgh venue for the OET examination in partnership with International House London.

Social programme

Our fun and varied social programme is an integral part of your experience. It not only provides a platform for you to learn about new cultures but also encourages your language learning outside of the classroom. Hang out with other students from around the world and our friendly staff in a relaxed environment on one of our regular afternoon or evening activities. There's something for everyone, whether it's a hike up Edinburgh]s very own extinct volcano, Arthur's Seat, to admire the city's astounding skyline, an in-depth tour of the Royal Mile's secrets, or an evening at the pub with live music! Most local activities are free, although some incur a small fee to cover costs.

Our summer homestay programme, based in our year-round school building in the Leith area of Edinburgh, gives you all the benefits of an international experience while living with one of our friendly hosts in the local community. If you want the opportunity to experience life as we do in one of the world's most outstanding cities with the support and safety net of a fully organised programme, then this is the ideal option for you. You will share your room with a student from another country unless you prefer to stay in a single room, but we think you will improve your English much more if you have an international roommate!

 

• 15 hours of General English lessons per week in international classes (maximum 15 students per class)
• Full-board twin or triple room homestay accommodation
• Packed lunches prepared on school premises on Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays and a hot lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Lunches at the weekends are provided by your host

If you want an exclusive campus-based programme with 24-hour care and supervision, our summer residential centre at Merchiston Castle, one of the UK’s top boarding schools, could be just what you are looking for. Set in 100 acres of beautiful parkland, the extensive campus, which is within easy reach of the city centre, features one of the largest tree collections in Scotland and is also the location of the ruins of 13th Century Colinton Castle. The main school buildings, purpose-built in the 1930s, are grand and impressive, but all with modern facilities. Edinburgh is Scotland's capital city and is the perfect destination for your language programme. It is a small city for a capital with only 500,000 inhabitants, but this means it is very easy to move around and students often tell us how comfortable they feel. With some of the top tourist attractions in the UK and a world famous cultural programme, we think there is no better place to spend your summer holidays!

 

You can't help falling in love with this majestic city. It has a medieval Old Town, an elegant Georgian New Town, and is home to Arthur's Seat, an extinct volcano in Holyrood Park with sweeping views of the city from its peak! Looming over the city is hilltop Edinburgh Castle, home to Scotland's crown jewels and the Stone of Destiny, traditionally used in the coronation of Scottish rulers. You might not know this but Edinburgh also hosts the world’s largest arts festival, ‘The Edinburgh Festival Fringe’, which takes place every August for 3 weeks.
